For the spice paste
1 tbsp 1 tsp Garam Masala Spice Mix
1 tsp Turmeric, ground
½ tsp Cayenne Pepper, ground
½ tsp Paprika, ground, mild (spice)
1 tbsp Olive Oil
½ cup Onions, white or yellow, raw, chopped
2  (ea. 0.11 oz) Garlic, raw
⅚ cup Tomatoes, red, canned, in tomato juice, no salt added
1 tsp Salt, Kosher salt, table salt

Preparation

  1. Serving size:
    12.70 oz (calculated)
    Notes: 1 1/2 cups of beef masala curry; sufficient as a main meal

    For the spice paste

  1. In a pot, toast the spices over medium heat until they develop a nice aroma.
  2. Add the oil and sautee the chopped onions in it until they turn translucent, about 3 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Add the tomatoes and salt and bring to a boil.
  5. Remove from the pot and optionally blend in a food processor.
  6. For the goulash

  7. In a large pot over medium to high heat, brown the diced meat.
  8. Add the spice paste, beef stock and lemon zest.
  9. Cover with a lid and let cook until the meat is tender.
  10. In a pressure cooker, this takes about half an hour on high pressure.
  11. If using a normal pot, reduce the heat to low and let cook for at least an hour. If you have the time, let the flavor develop over 2 to 3 hours.
  12. Season to taste.
  13. Just before serving, sprinkle with some chopped cilantro.
  14. Serve by itself or with a side of bread, rice or pasta.

  16. You can store the dish in an airtight container for 5 days in the fridge or up to 3 months in the freezer. For best results, thaw overnight. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop.
